Jason “RckBny” Johnson, an artist and photographer in Ypsilanti, MI, is the first featured move maker on our Motivational Entrepreneur List. Born and raised in the Detroit Area, Jason was a self-taught artist, drawing at a very young age. Early on, his father gave him the nickname, “Rock-Boney” because he was hard-headed and skinny. Jason used RckBny to brand his business, as he began selling paintings and merchandise in 2014. “I love composition and color, large artwork is mesmerizing, line weight is crucial when lines are needed.” His favorite artist is Salvador Dali. “His art form is amazing. I like his concepts, patience, intelligence, consistency, and influence…he inspires me to search deeper.” Jason’s motivation is progression. He wanted to explore other passions, so at the beginning of 2018, he dove into photography and art curating for himself and others. Jason felt it important to provide an artistic eye to all art forms, helping others expand upon their craft. He funds his business with his business as an artist and photographer. He also teaches art afterschool programs at Riverside Arts Center in Ypsilanti, MI.
CHALLENGES TURN VICTORIES
“One of my biggest challenges was learning patience. Patience with my art, my process. I used to want things done when I wanted them to be done. I used to force things and make mistakes. Before I found my niche, I was always concerned about the next individual or how my work would stand apart. Worried I wouldn’t find it. Patience is so invaluable. I began trusting myself and my process. I began believing that in time, all things come to light if you are consistent and always learning. You can’t be afraid to be inspired. You can’t be afraid to wait for inspiration.”
ADVICE TO OTHERS
“Work out loud! You learn through doing and through others. Put yourself out there, taking every leap of faith without hesitation. Don’t question yourself. Dive in. Be consistent, stay driven and keep your word. You will need a team. I’m a huge DIY individual, but eventually I realized we can’t do it all. Get your team in order. Assembly’s key.” – RckBny
