Jarael started preparing his own tax returns years ago. From there, he began preparing friends and close family members tax returns, and then friends of friends/family tax returns and so forth. Jarael vision became clear and he knew that tax prep and accounting services would become a successful business. By combining his knowledge of tax laws, years of professional experience, professional qualifications (CPA), education (BA Accounting), and network, Jarael believed he would be able to differentiate himself from other businesses with similar services, providing an unique experience and expertise a lot of those businesses could not match.
Major Refunds, PLLC was officially established in 2012, but was pursued full-time in 2019. Major Refunds offer a host of tax prep and accounting services to individuals and small businesses in the Southfield, MI area. Their goal is to provide clients with seamless, affordable professional services, uniquely tailored to meet their specific needs and schedules, either via virtual assistance or face-to-face. Major Refunds also educates individuals and small business owners in tax, financial, and accounting literacy.
Jarael stays busy outside of tax prep and accounting services. He is active in The National Association of Black Accountants, as well as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Jarael coach youth football and basketball, and is heavily involved in his children’s school and sports activities. In his spare time, he takes on small construction projects, travels with family and dines out with his Fiancé. Jarael is motivated by God, his family and the desire for success.
CHALLENGES TURN VICTORY
The biggest challenge for Jarael regarding tax prep and accounting services was changing it from a hustle to a business. “As mentioned, I started out doing mainly friends and family where I charged well below market prices. It was just extra money on the side. Shifting to a business mindset, I had to learn to separate personal relationships from business and value my services accordingly.” – Jarael Major, CPA

FUTURE GOALS
Jarael has a lot of community and business initiatives in the works. Without giving away too much, Jarael informed us that he is working on educational workshops focused on financial literacy, tax, savings, concepts of interest, etc., partnerships with different institutions to help give back to the community, empowering the youth and other sponsored events and giveaways. As the business grows, so has the need for office space and new services. Jarael is also working on a mobile app for Major Refunds.
